As people who make games, we have the rare opportunity to make a world for the player to be in.
While movies and books can show us their very own, nothing comes close to how submerging a game can do it, letting the players explore by themselves.

We must decide what to bring to our worlds. We must pack giant suitcases of relicts. Or at least fill our pockets. What do we take to our very own lonely island?

After all, someone will visit the island after you’re gone and find the tent you put up. Monuments of your personhood. The player will get a glimpse of you, you who made the game. Evidence of you, if you want it or not.

And feeling the person behind the game, knowing someone made it, makes it so much more special.

Sure, it’s nice to be swept away.
Forgetting about everything else.
But as long as I have to stand with one foot in the real world (and we didn’t find a way to be completely uploaded to the web yet), sweeping me away will only get me this far.

Don’t give me a sword, don’t give me a spaceship. Don’t give me the story of a superhero. I find it boring. I want you to show me what’s inside your room. I want to know if you like disco music. I want to know which bubble tea flavor you chose or if you like rain.

As horrible as our real world is, there is also great stuff, worthy of keeping.
As much as we want to escape, let’s not forget why it’s okay to come back.
Instant ramen.
Rewatching death note.
Holding hands with your friends.

So, why put your kpop demon hunter crush into your game?
Because it’s easier to come back to earth when 1. I know there is something cool waiting for me there and 2. I know you’ll be there too.

This world might not be your or my first choice,
but I sure as hell will find something for us to be exited about.
